Keller again...our calmest one
Jeremy: Katie was discharged from the Hospital yesterday :).
While I was super excited to bring her home, it was a pretty high stress day for her as she thinks about having to more time away from our babies. Our goal is to get Katie into either the Fischer House or to Navy Lodging, but for now there's just no room at either. So today, Katie is going to get a little time relaxing at home until we can get back up to Bethesda together. We'll find out tonight if room opens up at the Navy lodge.
I am happy to say that Katie is exceeding all the expectations of her care givers (this is really no surprise to me). Katie's doc and surgeon for the C-section said she was the best patient she's ever had, and one of Katie's favorite nurses said she was an "A+" patient. They all reassured Katie that she's doing really well and that meant a lot to Katie since she's in new physical & emotional territory. I'm grateful because Katie's recovery is going faster than expected, and she is walking around pretty comfortably.
As for our little girls, we got to hold them all yesterday evening and they are so cute!
Hollister did Kangaroo care with Katie for about 45 minutes and just kept looking at Katie and I. So far, we think Hollister looks more like Katie, while the K & Q look more like me. Hollister is doing great, eating well, and gaining weight. She is off the CPAP and requires little supplemental O2. She loves to hear Katie & I's voices and looks around when she hears us.
I got to hold Quin yesterday and we both got in a little Kangaroo care time! She gives a little drama when you pick her up, but she really responds to shhh-shhh-shhh soothing and slept very well after just a moment of fuss. She also was practicing sucking on a binky during feeding time, so she'll probably be the first to start practice breast feeding in a while.
Katie got to hold Keller for a while, which was really important to both of us given all little Keller has been through. Her care team has tried to give her a pec (central) IV line, but they just can't get the line to navigate to the right major vessles. Bottome line, the pec-line isn't quite as effective as they want it to be, but her neo-natologist still thinks things are good enough to not have to go to a more drastic brac-line to access the right blood vessles. What it all means is that Keller is a little more dependedant on the calories she gets from milk because they can't deliver her IV feeding solution as effectively. Because of this, she's had the least positive weight gain results. The good news is she's up to 8mL every few hours and she's "processing" it well (as evidenced by the diapers)! So we're taking this set-back as a very minor issue. Keller also responds well to soothing, and really has been the calmest of the bunch. She takes all the poking and prodding in stride (better than mom and dad do).
Thank you for the updates Jeremy. I think this blog is a life saver for all of us, and it's going to be great for you & Katie to look back on when all of this is a blur in a couple years. I agree, from what I can tell in the pictures Hollister looks a little more like Katie & the other two resemble you. They are absolutely precious. Love you all.
ReplyDeleteThanks Aly. We have been surprised by how many people say they keep up with the blog. As Hollister's face fills we can see how she's got a lot of features from both of us.
ReplyDeleteThe nurses chuckle when we compare and tell us that our babies will really change their look a lot over the next few weeks. We still like to speculate!
